Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market Size

The global Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market size was valued at USD 1.04 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 1.10 billion in 2026 to USD 1.73 billion by 2034, registering a CAGR of 5.80% during the forecast period from 2026 to 2034.

Alkyl succinic anhydride (ASA) is a reactive specialty chemical used mainly as a functional intermediate and performance additive. In commercial paper chemistry, the term ASA commonly refers to alkenyl succinic anhydride, which is reacted with maleic anhydride and long-chain olefins and used as an internal sizing agent. The chemistry gives paper and board greater resistance to water and other liquids. Kemira describes its ASA products as 100% active liquid sizing agents used in fine paper, liner, sack paper, packaging board, containerboard and gypsum board.

Paper and board remains an important demand driver. European paper and board production reached 77.6 million tonnes in 2025, although output declined 1.5% from 2024; globally, production was broadly unchanged. China was an exception, with paper and board production increasing 2.9%.

ASA chemistry is also moving beyond conventional papermaking. Clariant's current Genopur ASA is an alkenyl succinic anhydride used as a hydrotrope and solubilizer in hand dishwashing, hard-surface cleaning and laundry detergents. Alkyl succinic anhydride derivatives also have documented uses in lubricant additives and specialty formulations.

The market is consequently influenced by two different demand mechanisms: paper producers require consistent hydrophobicity and machine performance, while specialty-chemical formulators use the reactive anhydride group to modify surface, dispersing, emulsifying or lubricant properties.

Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market Size, Growth & Trends | 2034

Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market Drivers

Packaging Paper and Board Sustain Demand for ASA Sizing

The largest structural demand mechanism for ASA chemistry is paper and board sizing. Internal sizing reduces liquid absorption and improves the performance of paper used for packaging, printing, labels, linerboard and other applications. Kemira states that its ASA sizing portfolio is used across liquid packaging board, containerboard, fine paper, printing paper and molded-fiber applications.

Packaging remains particularly relevant because paper and board are increasingly used as alternatives to some plastic packaging formats. Kemira connects its sizing chemistry demand with paper and board applications including packaging and compostable paper products.

The commercial effect is not simply higher paper production. Different grades require controlled water resistance, and mills must manage sizing chemistry alongside retention, coating and converting requirements. Solenis identifies ASA as one of its principal internal-sizing chemistries for improving aqueous holdout and hydrophobicity in paper and packaging board.

The counterbalance is that European paper production remains under pressure from weak graphic-paper demand and high manufacturing costs. Cepi reported that European graphic-paper production declined 7.2% in 2025, although packaging-related grades were comparatively stable.

Specialty Formulations Are Broadening the ASA Demand Base

ASA's reactive functional group enables manufacturers to create derivatives for applications beyond paper sizing. Lubricant formulations can use succinic-anhydride chemistry to create dispersants and other performance additives, while detergent formulators use alkenyl succinic anhydride as a hydrotrope or solubilizer. Clariant's Genopur ASA provides a current commercial example across hand dishwashing, hard-surface cleaning and laundry detergents.

The diversification mechanism matters because it reduces dependence on a single downstream industry. Lubricant additives are linked to automotive and industrial equipment, while detergent applications are tied to household and institutional cleaning consumption.

This also changes competitive requirements. Specialty formulators typically require consistent purity, predictable reaction behavior and formulation compatibility. Producers that can provide multiple chain lengths, purity levels and technical support can therefore compete on formulation performance rather than commodity price alone.

Asia-Pacific Paper Capacity Is Supporting Regional ASA Demand

Asia-Pacific has become an important center for both ASA production and paper manufacturing. Kemira describes its Nanjing facility as its largest ASA production site and expanded the facility with a third production line, additional storage and tank capacity to respond to increased demand in the region. The expansion became fully operational in October 2024.

The demand connection is particularly strong in China, where paper and board production increased 2.9% in 2025 even as production declined in several other major markets.

Regional manufacturing reduces logistics requirements and improves supply reliability for paper mills that need continuous sizing-agent availability. It also encourages local technical support and formulation development.

The constraint is that ASA demand remains tied to the economics of paper production. Cepi reported that China's growth contrasted with declines in the U.S., Japan, Canada and South Korea in 2025, demonstrating the uneven geographic pattern of paper-industry demand.

Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market Restraints

Substitution by Other Sizing Chemistries Limits Volume Expansion

ASA competes directly with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD), rosin sizing and surface-sizing systems. Solenis maintains portfolios covering ASA, AKD, AnKD, rosin and surface-sizing chemistries, allowing paper mills to select formulations according to pH, paper grade, machine configuration and performance requirements.

ASA also has process-management challenges. Solenis documented a packaging-mill case where ASA use created sizing variability and deposits, prompting development of a surface-sizing approach designed to reduce or eliminate surface ASA.

This means demand growth depends on the ability of ASA suppliers to demonstrate lower dosage, better emulsification, consistent sizing and clean machine operation. Solenis reported a separate case in which an ASA sizing program reduced sizing dosage by 20% and improved process economics, illustrating both the efficiency opportunity and the potential for lower chemical consumption per tonne of paper.

Feedstock and Energy Costs Affect Specialty-Chemical Economics

ASA production depends on maleic anhydride and long-chain olefin feedstocks, making the product exposed to petrochemical feedstock prices, energy costs and logistics. The production chemistry itself involves high-temperature reaction conditions.

The downstream paper industry also faces energy and manufacturing-cost pressure. Cepi reported that European paper producers continued to face high energy and manufacturing costs in 2025, alongside geopolitical and trade pressures.

These conditions can squeeze both suppliers and customers. Paper mills may reduce chemical consumption or defer upgrades, while ASA producers must maintain margins despite fluctuations in feedstock and transportation costs.

Alkyl Succinic Anhydride Market Opportunities

Bio-Based ASA and Renewable Sizing Chemistry

Bio-based sizing chemistry is opening a new product-development path. Kemira's FennoSize MO uses maleated high-oleic sunflower oil instead of conventional fossil-based olefins and is positioned as an ASA-like sizing agent. Kemira states that the product provides similar performance and cost-efficiency to standard ASA and is applicable to multiple paper and board grades.

The commercial opportunity is driven by paper producers seeking lower fossil-material intensity while maintaining water resistance. The chemistry is particularly relevant to food-contact and packaging applications because Kemira states that its current product meets applicable BfR and FDA requirements for food-contact use.

This creates room for suppliers to compete through carbon footprint, renewable feedstocks and compatibility with existing paper-making processes rather than only through conventional product pricing.

Higher-Performance Packaging and Molded-Fiber Applications

The movement toward fiber-based packaging creates additional demand for sizing technologies that control water and liquid absorption. Kemira specifically identifies molded fiber, packaging board and containerboard among ASA-related applications, while Solenis offers sizing and PFAS-free water/oil-holdout solutions for molded-pulp applications.

The opportunity is strongest where paper or molded fiber must replace materials with inherently higher moisture resistance. ASA suppliers can benefit when customers require controlled Cobb values, improved converting performance and stable machine operation.

Specialty Surfactants and Detergent Formulations

Clariant's current Genopur ASA demonstrates that ASA chemistry can serve specialty formulation markets outside pulp and paper. Its use as a hydrotrope and solubilizer in hand dishwashing, hard-surface cleaning and laundry detergents creates an additional demand stream.

The opportunity is commercially different from paper sizing because detergent formulators value solubilization, formulation stability and compatibility with other ingredients. Suppliers that develop application-specific ASA derivatives can therefore capture higher-value specialty-chemical demand.
